I remember sitting on Storm King Mountain in the Hudson Highlands seeing Breakneck Ridge burn across the river and thinking to myself - “If only I could have been there to stop the burn.”
Then visiting Breakneck Ridge a few weeks later I realized something. Mother Nature naturally enjoys a good burn once in a while - for after, there is a rebirth, a succession, a resurrection of life. Engines of revival.
Taking this a metaphorical step further - the frustration and anger I’ve (and many have been feeling) during this time in our country has been a slow and plodding constant for a few years now. When critical thinking and empathy (both things I try to teach my students all the time) go out the window, when you are left with talking heads that have arguments already having answers formulated in their heads, when some are too comfortable, complacent or lazy to really listen, when you have leaders weaponizing social media with lies and hate.. there will come an opposite and equal reaction. It’s just Nature’s way.
Burn off the hate, burn off the pride, burn the hubris and lies. And then, slowly but surely, watch us rebuild, regrow, reassess, and hopefully reaffirm our love for each other. Cause the other way just ain’t working.
“In this fire we have grown - Eternal Summer, hearts of gold”
The sun is still shining folks.
lyrics
These, these are the days
Of peddlers play,
Leeching on your lunacy
These, these are the days
When a tick is king,
Feeding on everything
These, these are the days
When the foolish pray,
And power makes them pay
These, these are the days
When truth is raped,
And honesty is shamed
So I choose to walk alone
When my brothers lost all hope
Setting fire to his home
Eternal Winter, hearts grow cold
Burn, burn it all away
Successions mine,
Engines that will revive
Wash, wash it all away
A full moon guides,
We’ll rise, we are the tide
Rise, rise above the fray
Perspective gained,
It will be alright
Oh, these are the days
When the sun will shine,
Yes, just give it time
So we choose to walk among
Our greatest Mother, chosen one
In this fire we have grown
Eternal Summer, hearts of gold
